When you arrive in Vienna and you're not sure what sights to visit, the Vienna state opera is definitely one of the first things you should visit. The building is not difficult to find. Due to its location on the Opernring, the Vienna state opera will attract your attention immediately. Parts of the building were built in 1869, others a few years later in 1876. The old historical façade was built in a Renaissance style and makes the Vienna state opera one of the most astonishing buildings in the Austrian capital. Big Parts of the Vienna state opera were destroyed during the Second World War. Even the interior got damaged; the entire façade though remained undamaged and can still be admired in its original form. If you stand in front of the building and look to your left and right you can see two very old fountains which represent music, dance and love.
One further beautiful detail of the Vienna state opera is the bronze statutes which represent heroism and fantasy. You can find these statues in the arcade loggia where you can also admire the painted Magic Flute cycle. During the winter it is protected by glass cover but don't let that distract you. The set and costume workshops are in the buildings of the Austrian National Theatre next door. What most people don't know is that during rehearsals and during preparations for performances the Vienna state opera can be reached through an underground tunnel so that all the necessities for a performance can be transported quickly without getting stuck in the heavy Viennese traffic.
Apart from its fascinating façade the Vienna state opera offers a huge amount of rooms to admire. Apart from the rehearsal rooms there are various administration offices and even a canteen. The Vienna state opera is really worth seeing so do not miss the chance to go there.
