Success in the Classroom - Get An Attitude Tune Up To Lighten Up

In the opera "Falstaff" by Verdi, the cast sings the finale: "All of us fools and we laugh at each other's folly". At one point they were actually pointing at the audience! Suddenly I go it! During the whole opera, the main character John Falstaff, was making a fool of himself thinking he was going to woo two rich women at the same time and get take their money pretending to only be interested in one. What he didn't know was that the women were best friends. When they compared their love notes they realized what was going on. While the plot to get rich was unfolding the two women had a plot of their own.

Much of the opera was funny. All of it was a spoof at ourselves and our lives. In the end, everyone looked at themselves for what they were and just started laughing. No matter what they did or who they did it to, they didn't take themselves seriously. Despite the fact that the characters were from different life styles, they got along in the end using this approach.

It was their attitude that made the difference. The women could have been really mad, mean and nasty to their suitor but they chose an attitude and a way of being that changed the course of their lives and the lives of those around them.

If we can bring this into the classroom the difference would be huge. Imagine modeling a disposition that would change the lives of the children, their peers, families, communities, etc? If you are a controlling person especially, you might want to practice letting go.

Here are some ways to get an attitude tune-up in the classroom:

  • Don't take things so seriously as this leads to "reacting" and not "responding". Start looking at your style and actions.

  • Observe yourself throughout the day, make mental notes or jot them down. Then figure out a way to alter it to be more humorous.

  • Make a sign and post it in your class, on the door, or on your desk. Get the students to help you.

  • Have a discussion about ways you can all lighten up. The students will welcome problem solving techniques as most families are stressed out on a daily basis as it is. You will be helping to reshape their character and utilize healthy ways to cope.
Make sure you do not insult anyone. Self-deprecating humor is appropriate and they will see that as you laugh at your mistakes that you are human and it is okay not to be perfect.

Don't be afraid to become the fool like Falstaff. Change your attitude and laugh at your own folly. If you have to, wear a clown nose to get into the part.
