Everyone knows Ellen Degeneres is funny. There is no doubt about that. Ranking number 17 on the Forbes list of the 20 richest women in entertainment, Ellen brings in around $65 million per year in her job as a talk show host and her multiple gigs as the host of award shows.
In the mid 1990's Ellen was the star of her self-titled hit sitcom Ellen, but the show was canceled when she lost ratings as a result of her character coming out as a lesbian. The public was not as accepting of her sexual orientation and therefore shunned the show as a result. After that, she could be found in various film projects including the HBO hit, If These Walls Could Talk II, which consisted of three stories of lesbian women living in three different periods of the 20th century and how, as time progressed, society became more accepting of the lifestyle. Ellen's story co-starred Sharon Stone as her partner and the storyline surrounded the fact that the characters wanted to become parents.
In 2003, Ellen found her doorway back into the hearts of Americans through her talk show Ellen which consists of cheery themes and an all-around good time. Through her show, she regularly jokes about being a lesbian and talks of her partner Portia De Rossi. Through public reaction to her openness regarding her sexual orientation, it has become quite clear that the public 'got over it' long ago and sees Ellen for the funny comedienne she is.
Ellen does make regular contributions to charities and to various guests on her show, but one cause she is particularly fond of is funding for breast caner research. Since her mother's bout with breast cancer, Ellen has been passionate about making sure women get their yearly mammograms and wants to ensure that women are educated about breast cancer. Through this endeavor, Ellen hopes she will be able to make a difference in the lives of women who are at a potential risk for this disease. Chances are she has already made a huge difference.
